Current Challenges and Issues in Professional Development
COABE Annual Conference, Pittsburgh, PA
March 16, 2014
Adult education currently faces many changes, and change opens the door to many new opportunities for professional development. The AALDP Pre-Conference will address the impact of some of those changes on our work as professional developers, including the adoption of the Career and College Readiness Standards in Adult Education, preparing for the GED®2014. The important role of advocacy as it relates to the work of professional developers will be addressed. Participants will have multiple opportunities to engage with colleagues and explore specific topics highlighting innovative, successful professional development.
This session will be a team presentation that will address current challenges and issues that face professional developers in adult education. Presentations and small group discussions will include ideas for professional development related to the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education, the challenges of preparing teachers to work with adult learners who are pursuing their GED®, and professional development to support Career Pathways initiatives. Presenters will represent different states, models, and approaches to professional development. Participants will learn about tools, models, and initiatives that will guide professional developers in helping adult educators meet the 21st Century demands of the adult education classroom. The important role of advocacy will also be a topic, as it relates to professional development. This interactive session will provide opportunities for networking. Participants are invited to share their own tools, models, approaches, and initiatives throughout the session; questions are also welcome for discussion.
